Blood Brothers UK Tour : Our Review

Published on 5 November 2024 at 23:59

Last night we were be invited to attend the press night of Blood Brothers at the Kings Theatre in Portsmouth. Having never seen the show (I know I can’t believe it either) I had only a vague understanding of the plot and not much else. Now after actually seeing it , I don’t think any other show has ever had such an impact on me!
Heartbreaking, moving and funny at times. It will stay with me like no other show has done before.

The story starts at the end. A tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Despite approaching being nearly 45 years old, this classic story seems to have not lost any of its power, passion, or biting social commentary on the class system in Britain. If anything it seems more relevant today than ever.

Vivienne Carlyle plays the role of Mrs Johnstone and she is no stranger to the role  having played it during its time in the West End, and it shows! She sings the role superbly, and powerfully conveys the angst of a mother who loses a child. It is impossible to not to feel her pain and be moved by Carlyle’s Performance.

Sean Jones is a sensational Mickey, and it’s hard to believe anyone else could ever play this role. His range is incredible going from fun loving Mickey age 7 right up to adulthood where he’s in depression and despair. The chemistry between Jones & Joe Sleight, who is brilliant as Eddie is totally believable. Together their performances are both a roller coaster of hilarious and absolutely heart breaking moments at times. Their story is complemented so well by Gemma Broderick as Linda and James Ledsham as older brother Sammy.

Sarah Jane Buckley dazzles in the part of  Mrs Lyons. Portraying beautifully her downward spiral from prim and proper to complete madness but it’s Scott Anson’s portrayal of the Narrator that really was my favourite. Constantly skulking in the shadows and a looming reminder to the mothers that actions have consequences.

Our Verdict

This show was just breathtaking from start to finish. When the finale came there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre and the cast were met with a standing ovation from the entire audience. Something I suspect happens at every performance of this amazing show and  phenomenal cast.
