London Eye: Sight Seeing From Up High

Published on 28 August 2024 at 10:58

Formally named the Millennium Wheel, can you believe the eye has been a fixture on the South Bank of the River Thames for 24 years!! With 3 million visitors a year it is also the most popular tourist attraction in the UK. The London Eye has been on our 'to do' list for so long and we finally got round to it this summer!

We booked through the Merlin pass booking portal which offered various time slot throughout the day. We opted for trip at 5.30pm and I’m so glad we did as it was the perfect way to end a very busy day!

When you receive your confirmation email it states that the time you book is the time you can join the queue. At busier times I can imagine there maybe a bit of a wait so a good idea to keep this in mind.
As it actually happens, when we arrived to check in at the queue because we were Merlin Pass holders and the fast track wasn’t busy they very kindly sent us to the fast track queue! It wasn’t particularly busy but this did mean we only waited a couple of minutes in fast track before we boarded!

Each Capsule holds up to 25 passengers and I think we probably had that in ours but you don’t feel packed in and there is plenty of space to move around to observe the different views. What I found interesting is I am not good with heights normally but I didn’t at any stage have a problem on board. It feels really safe once inside and the breath taking views distracts you I think! The eye rotates at 26 m2 per second: its movement is slow and you don’t notice the movement at all once inside. We were lucky as it was a beautiful clear day when we took our trip so we had amazing views of the London sky line. I think it’s probably equally as amazing at night but I think might ruin it a bit if you were unlucky enough to go on a cloudy day.

The best part for Mason & I was the fantastic view of Big Ben. Mason had been told that on a good day you could see all the way to Legoland! I don’t know if that’s true but that day we defo didn’t. He was too busy enjoying it to be disappointed luckily!

Final Verdict

If you’re thinking of taking a trip do it!! You absolutely won’t be disappointed. However, although loved our trip on the London Eye it’s not an experience we would repeat over and over again like other Merlin attractions. We feel like we’ve experienced it so we wouldn’t need to go back again. I think I would like to see it at night one day but I’m not in any hurry. It’s is a very special experience and I can see the attraction to having weddings, etc on board.
