AJ’s Diner Havant Review: A Retro American Feast for the Whole Family

Published on 24 January 2025 at 20:15

If you’re ever in Havant and fancy a bite to eat with a side of nostalgia, look no further than AJ’s Diner! We've heard amazing things about this place since it opened in December but she just hadn't got round to visiting until now with all the Christmas madness! Mase and I decided to pop in on a whim tonight on our way home and we were so glad we did.

This family-run gem serves up not just a meal, but an experience, with its warm, retro American diner vibes that will instantly make you feel at home. Mason put it best when he said "Mum, I feel like we're in a movie!".

When you step in you’re instantly transported to a classic American diner straight out of the ‘50s. Think chrome details, neon signs, and checkered floors – it’s fun, it’s relaxed, and perfect for everything from a casual lunch or evening meal with the kids to a cheeky cocktail with friends.

The staff at AJ’s Diner are attentive without being overbearing, ensuring you’re well taken care of from start to finish. It’s clear that the diner is a labour of love, run by people who genuinely care about making your visit enjoyable. You're greeted by a friendly face and treated like part of the family!

The menu is packed with American diner classics, and everything is done with a real emphasis on comfort food done right. I had their classic smash burger with came with fries and the most AMAZING coleslaw, which was clearly homemade. The burger patty reminded me the ones served at Five Guys, but the whole package was 100 per cent better!!

Mason had the Cheese Dog, which was HUGE and came with fries, coleslaw side and a topping of Mac & Cheese. This again was delish but too much for him to eat! We were too excited and hungry and didn't notice there was a seperate children's menu! That was totally our fault though not the lovely staff!!
Mase was torn between trying a milkshake and a "float". The whole concept of a fizzy drink with ice cream blew his mind that much that he had to go with that one! He opted for a Fanta one and was very happy with his choice.

Even after all that we couldn't not try a pudding, Mase had been eyeing them up since we walked in! He chose the Oreo Stacker pancakes, which consisted of 3 American style pancakes with a layer of crush Oreo's and vanilla ice cream inbetween, topped off with whipped cream! It was honestly as good as it sounds but as it was a bit too much for Mase I had to help him...as you can imagine I was not dissapionted about this!

Our Verdict

Would we go back? Absolutley, this time though we would defo look at the kids menu. The prices are really reasonable and the food is outstanding!  Think juicy burgers, loaded fries – all made with fresh ingredients and plenty of love that you only really get these days from a family run establishment. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the puddings are a must-try.
